Ginger Switchel

Vinegar drinks are all the talk this summer and in making homemade shrubs it has led me to another quite old fashioned drink called a Switchel.  What is a Switchel you might ask.

Switchel’s debatably originated in the Caribbean, but New England also holds credit as the source of Switchel’s and it became a popular summer drink in the American Colonies in the late 17th century.  By the 19th century, it had become a traditional drink to serve to thirsty farmers at hay harvest time, hence the nickname Haymaker’s punch.

It’s a great way to take your Apple Cider Vinegar Wellness Tonic and it works well with N°1 and N°2 as they both contain ginger.  Ginger has wonderful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and our vinegar with ‘The Mother’ will take care of your gut microbiome.

Recipe

Ingredients

2 tbsp N°1 or N°2 Apple Cider Vinegar Wellness Tonic

¼ tsp grated fresh ginger

2-4 tsp maple syrup or honey (optional)

1 cup soda or filtered water

garnish with a sprig of mint and a slice of lemon

Combine all the ingredients in a glass jug.  Leave in the fridge to infuse for 2 hours or as long as a day.

Sieve through a colander into a cold glass.  Add maple syrup or honey to taste (optional).
